Java Fern is a great species for those who are just getting into the hobby. It grows great under low light and actually doesn’t need soil in the substrate for good growth. (I know, I can’t believe I said that either 😉 If you tie it to a rock or piece of drift wood it does best.
The Java Fern plant is super forgiving and grows in both fast and slow moving water in Asia. I personally have taken it out of the water and had it almost dry out fully, once put back into the water it quickly came back.
I was at Claus Christensen’s talk at the last AGA and he showed a picture of this plant growing upside down under a waterfall. He showed that same waterfall dried out during dry season and the ferns living on.
I love the varieties that it comes in, with tri-dent being one of my biggest favorites. (Yes, I have some java ferns for sale on occasion at Aquatic Jungles, check out our Java Fern Jam Pack ….) I expect to keep seeing variations of it coming into the hobby…
